We are delighted to announce our first speaker! Dr Ruth Berggren will be discussing her experiences during Hurricane Katrina which hit New Orleans in 2005.

Dr Berggren directs the Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics at UT Health San Antonio. In this role, she teaches ethics and professionalism while nurturing empathy and humanitarian values. Dr Berggren arrived at UT Health San Antonio in autumn 2006 after an eventful stint at New Orleans' Charity Hospital, where she stood by patients in the HIV ward during Hurricane Katrina until all were safely evacuated.

Most recently, she has been active in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic as a member of San Antonio's Health Transition Team and a special adviser to Bexar County.
