Other programmes

Since the advent of the program in 2007, the PCP has developed and grown beyond measure. As a pioneering program we are immensely proud to be in a position to publish our working model for a Prehospital Care Programme highlighting what we do best here at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry and hoping to encourage others in their pursuit of developing similar programmes.

We have created an easy to read handbook on how to start up your own Prehospital care programme using our successful model: download it here.

Monthly academic forums are held in both Hull and York and are run by consultants, experts in the emergency care or occasional senior students presenting case studies. These sessions can be lecture-based, interactive or practical. HeartStart scheme allows students to gain qualifications and teach Basic Life Support (BLS) within the community, as well as run refresher BLS sessions to help out Phase I students with their exams. Two responder schemes – Community First Responder (CFR) for 1st and 2nd years and Lincolnshire Integrated Voluntary Emergency Service (LIVES) for the upper years provide a great opportunity to serve the public, get additional practical training and obtain experience in the pre-hospital setting by attending medical emergencies within their respective area. PCP also offers support and guidance to those interested in joining the military, as well as can help with commission during the undergraduate study. Other events run by the programme include volunteering for London Marathon to provide first aid and sports massage for charities, running a RAG (raising and giving) week 48-hour CPR marathon, as well as the second National Pre-hospital Care Conference, which was hosted by HYMS in January 2014.

South London PCP:

The South London Prehospital Care Programme was formed by the amalgamation of the King’s College London and St George’s Medical School Prehospital Care Programmes which were both started in 2011. By participating in the SL PCP, students are given the opportunity to accompany Paramedics either on a Fast Response Unit (FRU) or an ambulance. The South London PCP holds a monthly Academic Forum at Guy’s Campus, London Bridge for its students and any interested parties.

Peninsula PCP:

The Peninsula Prehospital Care Programme (PCP) is a programme for third year medical students at Peninsula Medical School in the South West. The Peninsula Trauma and Emergency Care Society (PTECS) has been working since January 2013 to launch a Prehospital Care Programme for third year medical students. Their aim of achieving ambulance placements throughout the year is still in development in conjunction with the South Western Ambulance Service Foundation Trust. However the programme has developed an academic training and simulator training course to develop skills in vitro, this which will comprise a large component of the one year long pilot course. This course is being developed following a similar successful course at Bart’s and the London Medical Schools since 2008.

Imperial PCP:

Imperial’s Pre-hospital Care Programme (PCP) is a pioneering initiative founded and managed by Dr. Peta Longstaff (Emergency Medicine Consultant) & Dr. Cosmo Scurr (Core Anaesthetic Trainee) designed to provide enthusiastic, clinical medical students valuable exposure to patients pre-hospitally. Each student is assigned a paramedic mentor, who teaches students and oversees their development of clinical skills on shifts. The practical experience is supplemented by teaching evenings for medical students and paramedics studying for the Diploma in Immediate Medical Care (DipIMC). Imperial’s PCP continues to move from strength to strength, with the combination of DipIMC evenings and regular paramedic shifts providing a wide learning experience for any student interested in pre-hospital care.

Southampton PCP:

The Southampton programme is still under development however students wishing to get involved in prehospital care are encouraged to join the First Responder team, and they hope to be able to provide opportunities to observe with an Ambulance / Rapid Response Vehicle in the near future.

University College London PCP:

The UCL pre-hospital care programme is an entirely student-led and devised, curriculum accredited pre-hospital care programme. Devised by a group of UCL medical students in 2012, this series of student selected components (SSCs) run as a continuing educational intervention throughout MBBS years 1 to 3. Over these three years, students successful in their application to join the programme spend time with London Ambulance Service (LAS) Paramedic mentors as well as with the medical team at Wembley National Stadium. Students complete written tasks whilst on shifts, and are obliged to attend monthly academic forums - which are open to all. Beyond this series of three SSCs, we run two SSCs in academic pre-hospital care during which students complete a library project and poster presentation on one academic aspect of pre-hospital emergency medicine.

We are very fortunate to enjoy strong links with other local and national programmes, the London Fire Brigade, South East Coast Ambulance Service, Christ Church Canterbury Paramedic Society and we are supported by (and contribute to) the Faculty of Pre-hospital care. Into the future we hope to further increase our student numbers, opportunities and affiliations so we may remain a sustainable and curriculum-accredited educational intervention. We extent a special thanks to our lead Consultant Dr Nora Brennan, lead Paramedic Seb Clover, founder Dr Samuel Bulford and to the Bart’s and The London programme who were very generous in their support and guidance during our inauguration.

Norwich/University of east anglia PCP:

Norwich Pre-hospital Care Programme (NPCP) was formerly known as the Society for Trauma, Emergency and Pre-hospital medicine or STEPUEA and was originally formed in 2010. The current committee is comprised of medical students, nurses and paramedics althought students from all healthcare backgrounds are invited to join. We hold regular seminars, lectures, hands on practical skills sessions, moulage and casualty simulation as well as community fundraising and networking events.

We are in the process of setting up a student division of the Community First Responder (CFR) scheme in partnership with East of England Ambulance service. In addition, we have links with two local charities - Norfolk Accident Rescue Service (NARS) and East Anglia Air Ambulance (EAAA) who we support by raising funds in exchange for their assitance in running our programme of events.
